Why We Switched From Wood Wicks to Cotton Wicks (And What It Means for You)

August 2025

At Crooked Wicks, we’re always listening, learning, and adjusting to make sure our products not only smell amazing—but also work beautifully for you. That’s why we’ve made a small but important change to our candles. We are transitioning from wood wicks to cotton wicks in all of our ready-to-purchase candles.

So, why the switch?

It’s All About the Burn (and the Experience)

We absolutely love the cozy crackle of a wooden wick—but they do require a bit more attention. From trimming the wick to keeping the flame consistent, wood wicks tend to need more maintenance and patience, especially for those new to candle care. After hearing from our customers, we realized that many of you were looking for a more effortless, reliable burn—and that’s exactly what cotton wicks deliver.

Cotton wicks provide:
✔️ A cleaner, more consistent burn
✔️ Easier lighting and relighting
✔️ Less trimming and upkeep. Our wicks are self trimming.
✔️ Better performance across a wider range of environments (including drafty spaces)

Prioritizing Customer Satisfaction

This change allows us to offer a more enjoyable experience right out of the box—no fiddling, no frustration, just light and enjoy. Our goal is always to provide a candle that feels like a treat from the very first spark to the final flicker. Switching to cotton wicks helps us do just that.

Still Love Wood Wicks? We’ve Got You!

For those who love the ambiance and charm of a wood wick, don’t worry—we’re not saying goodbye entirely. Wood wicks are still available in limited supply as we phase over to cotton or as special order. If you really love the crackle, let us know and we will work with you to create a custom wooden wick candle.

We’re so grateful for your feedback and support as we continue to refine our products to provide the best possible candle for you!

Wooden Wick Candle Care

Wooden wicks are a bit different from a traditional cotton wick- they burn longer, cleaner, and have a cozy crackling ambiance. but they do require a bit of extra care. here are our tips and tricks to get the most out of your candle:

  1. always trim your wick before each use, removing all charred wood from previous burns. if you don’t, the wick may not stay lit long enough to fuel the flame, causing it to extinguish itself. To trim a wooden wick remove all charred wood by pinching off the charcoaled ends. (Don’t go too short or the wick will drown in melted wax.)
  2. make sure to allow the wax to melt across the entire diameter of your candle on the first burn- this helps prevent tunneling, which can impact how well the candle burns.

these two simple tips will help your candle burn clean and long for the entire life of your wooden wick candle.
